Direct Object

The direct object is a noun phrase that names the being or object that receives the action of the verb.

  • Shape: It can be a noun, a prepositional phrase introduced by a preposition, or a personal pronoun.
  • Pronominalization: If a verbal phrase can be replaced by the pronouns lo, la, los, las, it is a direct object.
  • Concordance: Unlike the subject, the direct object remains invariable when changing the number of the verb.
  • Transformation into Passive: It occurs when the verb supports substitution by the periphrasis ser + past participle.

Indirect Object

The indirect object is the verbal complement that designates the recipient of the action jointly appointed by the verb and the direct object.

  • Shape: It is presented as a prepositional phrase introduced by the preposition a or as an unstressed personal pronoun.
  • Customization: The phrase functioning as an indirect object can be replaced by the pronouns le and les.
  • Transformation into Passive: Unlike the direct object, the indirect object does not change when replacing the verb with the periphrasis ser + past participle.

Prepositional Complement

The prepositional complement is a supplement introduced by a preposition required by the verb itself.

  • Shape: It is always presented as a prepositional phrase.
  • Replacement: It can only be substituted by a tonic pronoun preceded by a preposition.
  • Question: It answers a question in the format: verb + preposition + qué.

Adverbial Complement

The adverbial complement is the verbal complement that expresses the circumstances that frame the verbal action.

  • Form: It can present itself as an adverb, a noun phrase, or a prepositional phrase.
  • Adverbialization: Many circumstantial supplements can be replaced by an adverb of general meaning.
  • Abolition: It can usually be removed without affecting the rest of the sentence.

Agent Complement

The agent complement is the complement appointed to perform the action in sentences where the verb uses the ser + past participle periphrasis.

  • Form: It takes the form of a prepositional phrase headed by the preposition por.
  • Transformation into Active Voice: The agent complement becomes the subject when transformed into the active voice.

Attribute

The attribute is an object of the verb in constructions with copulative verbs (ser, estar, parecer) that assigns a quality or condition to the subject.

  • Form: It usually presents as an adjectival, nominal, or prepositional phrase.
  • Concordance: Whenever possible, the attribute agrees in gender and number with the subject.
  • Replacement: It can be replaced by the neuter pronoun lo.

Predicative Complement

The predicative complement is a verbal complement in construction with a non-copulative verb that names a quality or condition of the subject or direct object.

  • Form: Presented as an adjectival, nominal, or prepositional phrase.
  • Concordance: It agrees in gender and number with the subject or direct object.
