Luis de Góngora

Obra Poética

Góngora's work focuses on poetry that is either high-style or parodic:

  • Poesía Menor (Minor Art): Includes Moorish romances, pastoral, historical, and burlesque works (such as the Fable of Pyramus and Thisbe, a parodic version of the classic love story) and letrillas (burlesque and satire).
  • Sonnets: Themes include Petrarchan love (amended by the consciousness of time), burlesque, and a group focused on disappointment and the transience of life.
  • Poesía Mayor (Elderly Poetry): Includes the Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea and the Soledades. The Polyphemus depicts the Cyclops in love, enraged by Galatea, who kills her lover. These works emphasize pastoral grounds and are written in stanzas.

Style

Characterized by difficulty due to mythological allusions, the use of a learned lexicon, and the accumulation of rhetorical devices:

  • Phonics: Alliteration and paronomasia are emphasized.
  • Syntactic Form: Uses allusive periphrasis, syntactic cultisms, extreme hyperbaton, bimembral lines, correlations, and repeated structures.
  • Lexicon: Predominance of cultisms, sensory elements, associative fields, and metaphors (related to color and music).

Lope de Vega

A man of extraordinary creative capacity in narrative, theater, and lyrical poetry.

Obra Poética

Includes minor art compositions (letrillas, carols, seguidillas, romances) and Italianate poetry (sonnets, songs, eclogues, epistles).

  • Romances: Lope was a creator of the new romance, including Moorish, pastoral, and loving themes, as well as religious and moral themes in his old age.
  • Petrarchan Poetry: In his Rimas (a collection of various texts that includes the Art of Writing Comedies), he highlights sonnets (romantic, mythological, moral, and circumstantial). He also wrote La Dragontea and La Hermosura de Angélica (imitating the Renaissance style).
  • Poesía Religiosa: His Rimas Sacras reflect sacred sonnets and other poems of emotional devotion, confession of guilt, and regret.
  • Final Works: His last publication, Rimas Humanas y Divinas del Licenciado Tomé de Burguillos, incorporates the mock-heroic poem Gatomaquia. This collection features burlesque sonnets, satire, and parodies of Petrarchism.
