The Life of Guido and Joshua

Guido and Dora have a son named Joshua. Guido eventually opens his own bookstore. One day, men arrive to take Guido away, leaving Joshua in charge of the store. A lady enters, buys a book, and gives the child an envelope for his mother. Joshua realizes she is his grandmother, and she promises him a birthday gift.

On the day of Joshua's birthday, the family plans a meal. When Dora returns to find her mother, she realizes that her husband, his uncle, and her son are missing.

The Journey to the Concentration Camp

All three are placed on a train bound for a concentration camp. When Joshua asks his father where they are going, Guido tells him it is a birthday surprise. Meanwhile, Dora demands to be put on the same train as her family; eventually, the guards allow her to board. Joshua sees her and tells his father.

Life in the Camp

At the station, the men are separated from the women and the elderly. Guido tells his son that they are participating in a game; they must behave well to earn points and win a real armored car.

While Guido and the other men are forced to work, the elderly and children are sent to the "showers." Joshua, disliking the idea of bathing, escapes and hides with his father. From that day on, Joshua stays in hiding, believing they are playing a game of hide-and-seek while his father works.

Dora, who is assigned to sort the clothing of those killed in the gas chambers, hears her husband and son's voices over the camp megaphone, which brings her great relief.

The Doctor and the Game

One day, a doctor examines the working men, including Guido. Guido realizes the man is Dr. Lessing, whom he knew as a waiter. Guido hopes the doctor will help him, but the doctor only wants to discuss a riddle. Guido realizes the doctor is unstable and will not provide assistance.

Joshua wants to leave because he is bored and has heard rumors that people are being turned into soap and buttons. His father tells him that nobody is forced to stay and that they have enough points to leave, but Joshua ultimately decides to stay.

During a meeting, Guido takes his son to see the other German children so he does not feel alone. However, a nurse calls out, and Joshua is nearly discovered. Guido tells him he must remain silent to win the game. Later, Guido helps Joshua escape, and the boy hides while the camp is evacuated.
