Key Figures and Concepts in Catalan Literature and Linguistics
Ausias March: Life and Poetic Legacy
Born in Gandia, Valencia, in 1397. At 15 years old, he prepared to become an armed knight and participated in court festivities where he encountered troubadour poetry and music. He took part in diverse military expeditions. From 1425 onwards, he lived as a feudal lord.
Ausias March wrote one of the most important poetic works of the 15th century, becoming the creator of medieval Catalan lyrical poetry. He wrote all his works in Catalan, drawing upon his own experience and, above all, his reflections on love.
Jacint Verdaguer: The Great Catalan Poet of the 19th Century
Born in Folgueroles, Vic, in 1845. He was a priest dedicated equally to spiritual life and literary creation. His life reflected the temperament of a romantic artist. His idealistic, rebellious, and passionate nature led him to moments of glory, but also forced him to confront authorities and endure periods of marginalization.
Verdaguer is considered the creator of modern Catalan literature and the greatest Catalan poet of the 19th century. One of his primary objectives was the creation of great epic poems.
Major Epic Poems by Verdaguer
L'Atlàntida
This is a complex work that blends pagan and religious elements. The poem recounts how the young Genoese Columbus, after being shipwrecked, reaches the southern Atlantic coast of the peninsula. He is embraced by an old hermit who tells him the fabulous story of the sinking of the legendary continent that existed in the Atlantic near the Canary Archipelago.
Canigó
This is Verdaguer's most ambitious and representative work, an epic poem that explains the legendary and mythical origin of Catalonia.
The Visitor: A Character Description
The appearance of our visitor struck me the most, as I had expected the typical village doctor. He was very tall and thin, with a long, beak-like nose that stood out between two penetrating gray eyes. These eyes, set very close to each other, sparkled brightly from behind gold-rimmed glasses.
Although he wore clothing typical of the profession, he appeared rather unkempt. He wore worn trousers with frayed edges.
Literary Technique: Suspense (Enjòlit)
A key technical characteristic of the detective genre is the contrast between high points of tension and moments of calm, often full of omens.
We can define suspense as a literary resource that plays with the dosage of information, anticipation, and the acceleration of the disturbing plot to inspire curiosity in the reader.
