Key Elements of Economic Exchange and Labor Markets
The Market Environment and Price Determination
The market environment, where goods and services are exchanged and their prices are determined, is not necessarily a physical place. It requires two interrelated elements:
- The Offer: This is the set of goods and services offered for sale, reflected in the conduct of sellers.
- Demand: This is the set of goods and services consumers are willing to buy for a fee.
The prices of goods and services are determined by supply and demand. If supply is much greater than demand, the price will fall to stimulate consumption. Conversely, when supply is rather low, the price increases.
Families and the Economy
Families are consumers of goods and services, affecting both demand and prices. They also provide factors of production, supplying workers to companies. Companies are responsible for obtaining and offering goods and services in the marketplace. Companies belonging to several individuals are named corporations, and their owners are called shareholders.
Workers and Human Resources
Human resources are the people who work in a company and are an essential factor of production in the capitalist economy. Most market activities are subject to laws, hence the talk of the labor market.
For families, having employed or unemployed members is very important because wages are crucial. Unemployment means less income and, therefore, a decrease in consumption purchases and sales production. However, if the number of employed people increases, the economy revives.
Changes in the World of Work
The increased number of job seekers is due to the increasing incorporation of women and young people into the labor market. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have revolutionized production in undertakings:
- Workers are increasingly skilled.
- Firms have more facilities to hire and fire employees.
- Workers demand better working conditions and more time off, often achieved through agreements between social agents.
- There are more men than women employed in some sectors.
Globalization of the Economy
The media and ICT have created a global market. The same organization spreads over various countries worldwide to reduce costs and benefit both nations. This has led to the creation of types of economic integration, such as free trade areas and common markets. International bodies like the WTO and the UN favor economic globalization. The interdependence of different countries' economies causes any significant political indicator or event to have important repercussions globally.
