Theme 14: Jesus Christ, Key to Understanding the Mystery of Man. An integral human culture requires a vision of man understood in all his moral and spiritual capacities, in the fullness of his vocation. Here lies the deep nexus that constitutes the organic relationship linking Christian faith and human culture (John Paul II). Religious teaching and dialogue with culture offer students the opportunity to discover the fullness of the human being conducted in Jesus Christ.

No one can reduce the presentation of the mystery of Christ to seeing Him merely as a moral teacher or an example of life; one must also attend to His condition as man. He is God, and Jesus Christ is shown as the Son of God and the unique mediator among men. He is not one way among many; He is the unique Truth that comes from God. He is the fullness of life and the joy of all hearts. Jesus Christ is the key to understanding the mystery of man, giving meaning to his life and reality. His word renews life and culture.

Requirements for the Teacher of Religion

Theme 15: Requirements for the Teacher of Religion. For the professor of religion to truly help students in the critical assimilation of culture, it is essential that they have realized a personal and vital synthesis of cultural and intellectual access to their faith. This makes the faith intelligible and appropriate for their students. To help the student understand, the teacher must live their being in the world through a deep relationship with faith.

The Synthesis of Faith and Culture in Education

In relation to the content intended to assist in school activities, there is a complementarity between materials, including religious teaching. This contributes to the full formation of the student and the necessary synthesis between faith and culture. Through the cultural contribution of curriculum materials, students receive not only information and procedures but also an interpretation of different currents of thought and a way of understanding life.

Religious teaching in the field of formation tries to discover and identify the signs of the times and Gospel values, as well as the countervalues these signs sometimes contain. The proposal of the profession of religion in dialogue with culture must bear in mind:

• Purpose: We need to foster the moral and spiritual capacity of the person in our setting, creating an authentic culture of love, truth, beauty, goodness, liberty, and progress.
• Objectives: We must adapt means to ends, projects to ideals, and actions to moral standards to establish a desired equilibrium of values.
• Values: Priority of ethics over technique, the primacy of the person over things, the superiority of the spirit over the material, and a focus on man for the sake of man himself—his dignity, intelligence, will, consciousness, and fraternity.
