Understanding Sintered Materials and Powder Metallurgy

What are sintered materials and what are their characteristics? Their objective is the high-precision production of parts from material powders, compressing them in a mold at high pressures and proximate temperatures, followed by fusion and self-lubricating joints.

Describe the process of obtaining materials through powder metallurgy.

  • Obtaining powders: Atomizing liquid metal with air pressure or centrifugal force from a large metal disc.
  • Pressing: Compressing the powder while cold.
  • Sintering: Heating near the fusion temperature.
  • Finishing: Lamination or machining of the piece.

Applications of sintered materials:

  • Highly porous: Filtering elements.
  • Porous: Self-lubricating bearings.
  • Dense: High-precision parts.
  • Impregnated: Oil-retaining elements.

What is the main function of investment casting processes? It is used for coupling and threading parts.

What is a riser in casting processes? It is the air hole through which the excess material exits the process.

Describe the gravity mold casting process with lost foam (lost wax). A ceramic or metal body is warmed, the wax pattern melts and drains out, leaving the mold ready for pouring.

What is the main reason ferrous metals are better when hot rolled? Because otherwise, they would not be as resistant and lack a superior surface finish. Steel requires this process.

Explain forging and related processes. Unlike casting, forging consists of striking the ends of a section to increase its length and decrease its cross-section.

What does the wire drawing process consist of? Taking a wire and pulling it through a hole of a smaller diameter.

What differences exist between stamping and extrusion processes? Stamping relies on impacts, whereas extrusion applies continuous pressure at a higher production temperature.

What is oxyfuel cutting? It is a cutting process for any type of carbon steel using a pure oxygen and fuel gas combustion torch.

What is die cutting? It consists of cutting out a thin part with a specific predetermined shape using a press.

What is tooth set on a saw blade? It consists of tilting alternating teeth to the right and left to prevent the blade from binding and overheating.

Drilling, Lathe Operations, and Milling

Power transmission systems for drill movements: Pulleys, belts, or mixed gears.

How are drill chucks coupled to the drill head? In two ways: either the chuck is threaded onto the spindle, or it is non-threaded (straight, flat, or conical) and secured with a set screw to prevent it from slipping off.

Describe the feed mechanism of a drill. The system uses a pinion and rack; the rack is attached to the quill and moves the spindle vertically.

What is facing in lathe operations? It is the operation performed to create a flat, smooth surface perpendicular to the axis of rotation on the end of a workpiece.

Describe the movements in a lathe. Feed motion, cutting motion, and penetration motion of the cutting tool. The main components include the bed, headstock, tailstock, and carriage.

What are the movements in a milling process? Feed movement, cutting movement, and depth of cut.

Threads, Taps, and Manufacturing Tolerances

Classification of threads according to their profile: Triangular, trapezoidal, square, and round.

What is the lead of a thread? The linear distance a screw advances along its axis in one complete revolution.

What is the nominal diameter of a thread? The major diameter generated by the helical groove.

Manual threading of nuts: Taps are used, which are specially hardened screws with longitudinal grooves or flutes capable of generating internal threads by chip removal in a pre-drilled hole.

What are threading dies? Dies are used for external threading on rods or bolts.

Types of screws: Studs, coach screws, machine screws, and set screws.

What is manufacturing tolerance? Since producing a part to absolute perfection is impossible, the acceptable variation between the maximum and minimum limits of size is known as the tolerance zone.
