Human Reproductive System: Biological Processes and Anatomy
Reproduction
The biological process of producing offspring.
Sexuality
A human reproductive process involving two distinct sexes.
Menstruation
The final stage of the 28-day menstrual cycle where an unfertilized egg is released. This is the conclusion of the ovarian cycle.
Gametes and Gonads
- Gametes: Reproductive cells (Sperm in males; Ova in females).
- Gonads: Glands that produce gametes.
Fertilization and Nesting
- Fertilization: The union of the nuclei of the sperm and the egg.
- Nesting (Implantation): The process where the zygote (fertilized egg) attaches to the uterine wall.
Gestation
The period of development from embryo or fetus to birth, typically lasting 36 to 40 weeks.
Male Genital Anatomy
External Organs
- Penis: The copulatory organ.
- Scrotum: The sac containing the testicles.
Internal Organs
- Testicles: Male gonads.
- Epididymis: A duct system that stores sperm.
- Vas Deferens: Transports spermatozoa to the prostate.
- Seminal Vesicles: Glands involved in semen formation.
- Prostate: A gland that contributes fluid to semen.
Semen Composition: Sperm + seminal vesicle fluid + prostate fluid.
Female Genital Anatomy
External Organs
- Vulva: Includes the labia (folds at the vaginal entrance).
- Clitoris: An erectile organ.
- Hymen: An elastic tissue that partially covers the vaginal orifice.
- Vagina: The duct connecting to the uterus.
Internal Organs
- Ovaries: Female gonads that produce eggs.
- Fallopian Tubes: Connect the ovaries to the uterus; site of fertilization.
- Uterus (Matrix): A muscular organ where the embryo and fetus develop.
The Ovarian Cycle
A process occurring approximately every 28 days:
- Development of the oocyte.
- Ovulation: Release of the mature egg from the ovary.
- Migration of the ovum through the Fallopian tube.
- Hormonal preparation of the uterine walls.
- Outcome: If fertilized, a zygote forms. If not, the egg and endometrium are expelled (menstruation).
Biological Concepts
- Gametes: Haploid cells containing 23 chromosomes.
- Germ Cells: Diploid cells containing 46 chromosomes.
- Mating: Blood fills the erectile tissues of the penis, causing an erection for copulation.
- Ejaculation: Muscular contractions resulting in the release of semen.
- Expulsion Phase (Birth): The final stage of labor.
