The Plot of Four Hearts with Brake and Reverse

Four Hearts with Brake and Reverse tells the story of a researcher who finds a product that freezes time for those who are inoculated. Thus, he, his wife, his best friend, and another woman do not age, while everything around them follows its inevitable temporal course. There comes a time when they travel to an island to investigate the antidote for their personal and temporary paralysis, as they can no longer stand themselves.

The Hilarious Conclusion

The hilarious finale occurs when they finally get time to flow again, but in reverse. They become younger and younger until, upon returning to civilization, they have converted into children. Now, they must be looked after by their own grandchildren, who are, of course, adults.

Main Characters and the Three Eras

The story features five main characters (Emiliano, Valentina, Hortensia, Ceferino, and Ricardo) living across three very different eras:

  • 1860, Madrid: After solving various economic and romantic problems related to time, they ingest the salts that make them immortal. These salts were invented by Bremón and shared with Emiliano, a nosy postman who arrived by chance at Ricardo's house.
  • 1920, Paradise Island: Located in a possession of the United States, they are forced to leave after five years of residence. They realize they have outlived all their friends and family. The group is divided: Valentina, Hortensia, and Ricardo wish to die, fed up with living, while Emiliano is happy with life and Bremón is dedicated to his studies until he finds the solution for everyone.
  • 1936, Madrid: Back in the house shared by Federico and Eloísa, the characters have entered the age of children. They are the children of Ricardo and Valentina, and Margaret is the granddaughter, daughter of Eloísa.

Humor and the Meaning of Life

In Four Hearts with Brake and Reverse Gear, it is important to understand the plot from a completely unrealistic and purely humorous perspective, despite the ideological intensity regarding the meaning of life it contains. This improbable sequence of events, coupled with the author's excellent use of dialogue, makes it an entertaining work full of comic situations.

A Reflection on Immortality

The play features original characters, baffling dialogues, colorful personalities, and humorous situations that cause laughter while leaving a shadow of doubt: Really, would we be happy if we could be immortal forever?
