Geographic Concepts

Latitude: The angular distance (in degrees, minutes, and seconds) from any point on the Earth's surface north or south of the Equator (parallel 0°), measured along a meridian.

Consequences of Latitude

  • Solar Intensity: Due to proximity to the Equator, sun rays fall almost perpendicularly on our territory.
  • Seasons: We experience two distinct seasons: dry and rainy, rather than four.
  • Climate Stability: There is little need for major changes in clothing throughout the year.
  • Agriculture: Agricultural production remains constant.

Longitude: The angular distance from any point on the Earth's surface to the prime meridian, measured in degrees.

Consequences of Longitude

  • Cultural Context: We are immersed in the Western world, influencing our culture, beliefs, and values.
  • Solar Time: Local solar time varies between the extreme points of the country.

Meridian: An imaginary line joining the North and South Poles as a great circle.

Time Zones: Each of the 24 vertical stripes that divide the Earth's surface.

Parallels: Imaginary lines running in an east-west direction on a map grid, parallel to the Equator (latitude 0°).

  • Gran Sabana: A wide plateau located in the southeast of Bolívar state, with heights ranging between 700 and 1,400 meters.

Climate

The region features a tropical rainforest climate with high temperatures (consistently over 18°C) found in the north and south-central areas.

Vegetation

The region is characterized by dense forests and jungle ecosystems.
