Cardiovascular System Adaptation to Exercise
The cardiovascular system, comprising the heart, arteries, and veins, is responsible for providing oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Physical exercise produces a significant improvement in the functioning of the heart, increasing the volume of blood ejected with each stroke. It also leads to an increase in the cavities of the heart, and the arteries and veins widen, opening a greater number of capillaries.
Respiratory System and Exercise Benefits
The respiratory system, including the lungs and airways, is responsible for taking oxygen from the air, contributing it to the blood, and eliminating carbon dioxide by expelling it to the exterior. This increased volume, caused by physical exercise, leads to the first improvement in the respiratory system. The second improvement is an increase in the capacity of the cardiorespiratory system for oxygen transportation. The pulmonary organs responsible for both the process of oxygen supply and the absorption of carbon dioxide are the alveoli.
Locomotor System: Muscles, Bones, and Joints
Locomotor muscles are active elements of movement. These activate the body's passive elements, consisting of bones and joints, which are responsible for producing movements. Physical exercise, particularly strength training, increases the amount of muscle fibers. It also strengthens the muscles secured to the bones. Ligaments and tendons are strengthened with exercise, becoming stronger and more resilient. Physical exercise contributes to bone growth and the production of synovial fluid.
The Importance of Warming Up
Warming up is the process of preparing our bodies for a working state where the demands of physical exercise do not involve any risk for the different apparatus and systems involved. General warming prepares all parts of the body. Specific warming-up focuses on the body parts most involved in the subsequent activity.
Understanding Exercise Capacities
Aerobic Resistance
Aerobic resistance refers to the capacity to perform exercise in the presence of oxygen. This capacity allows us to sustain moderate or low-intensity efforts of long duration with sufficient oxygen supply. Heart rate typically ranges from 130-160 beats per minute during aerobic activity.
Anaerobic Resistance
Anaerobic resistance occurs when there is an oxygen deficit. It is the capacity that allows us to sustain very intense efforts for the longest possible time without sufficient oxygen input.
