The Evolution of Spanish Mining and Energy Sectors
Mining Industry in Spain
For several decades, the Spanish mining industry has been undergoing a restructuring rooted in several causes: the depletion of resources, low profitability relative to high extraction costs, significant environmental impact, and low international competitiveness.
Consequences of Mining Conversion
- The disappearance of many mining companies and the shift toward foreign capital investment.
- The introduction of technological innovations, leading to the closure of less competitive sites and increased unemployment.
- A shift from metal mining (iron, copper, mercury, pyrites) toward non-metallic mining (kaolin, potassium chloride, sepiolite) and industrial rocks (limestone, clay, granite, slate, marble).
Energy Sources in Spain
Non-Renewable Energy
- Coal: Primarily used for electricity generation, steel, and cement production. Main coalfields are located in Asturias and León. Factors such as deposit depletion, low coal quality, and mining difficulties explain the decline in Spanish coal production.
- Oil: A primary energy source in Spain, though it is imported from countries including the Russian Federation, Mexico, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran, and Iraq. Major refineries are located in Tarragona, Algeciras, Huelva, and Puertollano.
- Natural Gas: Consumption has increased due to demand from power plants, industries, and domestic use. Domestic production is limited, necessitating imports, primarily from Algeria, Norway, and Libya.
- Nuclear Energy: Ranks first in domestic energy production, primarily utilized for electricity generation at nuclear power plants.
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy sources (excluding hydro) are relatively new in Spain:
- Hydroelectric plants: Located mainly in northern Spain.
- Wind power: Has experienced a dramatic increase, with significant installations in Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragón, Navarra, and Andalusia.
- Solar energy: Highly prominent, especially in Andalusia.
- Biomass energy: Utilization is progressing slowly.
