Historical Stages of Catalan Development

The development of the Catalan language can be traced through several key historical stages:

First Stage: Roman Arrival

Around 218 BCE, the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula, introducing Latin as the dominant language.

Second Stage: Arab Influence and Carolingian Era

In 711, the arrival of the Arabs significantly impacted the region, leading to changes in language, religion, and customs over a relatively short period. To secure territory between the Ebro River and the mountains, the Marca Hispanica was established. By the 10th century, independence from the Carolingian kingdom began, initiated by the Count of Barcelona, marking the future development of Catalonia.

Third Stage: Formation of the Crown of Aragon

In 1135, the formation of the Crown of Aragon occurred through the union of the Catalan counties and Aragon, resulting from the marriage between the Count of Barcelona and the daughter of the King of Aragon. This event caused a shift southward. While Romance elements remained in major cities and interior farmhouses, Aragonese settlers dominated interior areas, leading to the dominance of Aragonese in some regions over Catalan.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment of linguistic divergence due to the scarcity of Latin references in documents from that time. However, the pronouncements and tours of the councils agreed upon in 813 predicted the language spoken by the people, which forms the basis of Catalan and Valencian. Although these languages derive from Latin, the information received was influenced by:

  • Pre-Roman languages before Romanization.
  • Germanic language contact.
  • Superstrate elements from French and Occitan (adstrate) and Castilian.

Phonetic Features

  • Hiatus: A gathering of two vowels pronounced separately.
  • Diphthong: Vowels pronounced together. Two rising diphthongs ($ ext{IOU}$ and $ ext{IEU}$) were present initially, while falling diphthongs ($ ext{descrescents}$) appeared later.

Word Creation Processes

New words are formed through various mechanisms:

  • Suffixes
  • Infixes
  • Prefixes

Suffix Classification

Suffixes are generally classified based on whether they:

  1. Change the grammatical category or meaning of the derived word (recategorizing suffixes).
  2. Allow the speaker to make an evaluation (evaluative suffixes, which are non-recategorizing).

Affixes include prefixes added to the top of the primitive root and suffixes added to the bottom.

Composition

Composition is a procedure for creating new words through the union of words. This mechanism is highly expressive and can be used in both vernacular and cultivated varieties.
