Essential Cell Organelles: Functions and Characteristics
Lysosome
Found in both cell types, it contains large amounts of digestive enzymes. Function: Intercellular digestion.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
Found in both cell types, it consists of two large membranes. Function: Aids in cell division, produces substances, and transports lipids.
Cell Wall
Found in plant cells, this is a rigid, thick structure that surrounds the cell from the outside. Function: Provides protection and is waterproof.
Plasma Membrane
Found in both cell types, it is formed by lipids with integrated proteins. Function: Regulates the selective entry and exit of chemicals and is involved in cell communication and recognition.
Centriole
Found in animal cells, these are two perpendicular cylinders. Function: Involved in cell division by forming the achromatic spindle.
Cytoskeleton
Found in both cell types, it is a network of protein filaments that span the cytoplasm. Function: Acts as the cell's skeleton, maintains structure, forms the spindle, and facilitates the movement of organelles.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
Found in both cell types, it consists of an extensive membrane system with attached ribosomes. Function: Transports substances, manufactures lipids, and supports protein synthesis.
Vacuole
Found in both cell types, it is a membrane that closes over itself. Function: Accumulation of substances, transport, and segregation of waste products.
Ribosomes
Found in both cell types, they are formed by two subunits of different sizes containing proteins and RNA. Function: Produce proteins.
Golgi Apparatus
Found in both cell types, it consists of 5 to 8 flattened vesicles. Function: Secretes proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids; contributes to the formation of vacuoles and lysosomes.
Chromatin
Found in both cell types, it consists of filaments composed of DNA and proteins. Function: Contains genetic information.
Mitochondria
Found in both cell types, it features two membranes: an external one and an internal one with smooth crests. Function: Cellular respiration.
Nuclear Envelope
Found in both cell types, it consists of two membranes that enclose a space with communication between the interior and exterior. Function: Acts as a boundary between the nucleus and cytoplasm.
Chloroplasts
Found in plant cells, these organelles consist of three membranes: an external smooth one and an internal one with folds containing chlorophyll. Function: Photosynthesis; converts light energy into chemical energy.
Nucleolus
Found in both cell types, it is a dense structure located in the nucleus containing DNA, RNA, and proteins. Function: Synthesis of ribosomal RNA.
