Economic Activity

Economic activity is a set of activities made by human beings aimed at meeting their needs. It involves producing goods and providing the necessary services.

Stages of Economic Activity: Production, Marketing, and Consumption

Production

Production combines natural resources, technology, and labor to obtain goods or services.

Types of Goods and Services
  • Consumer Goods: Directly meet the needs of consumers.
  • Produced Goods (Capital Goods): These are machines, tools, etc., that are used for the production of other consumer goods.
  • Production Services: Services like healthcare and public transport entail the creation and organization of hospitals, transport networks, or broadcasters.

Marketing (Distribution and Sales)

After production, commercialization occurs, involving distribution and sales. This is typically done in two stages:

  • Wholesale: Conducted by wholesalers who purchase large quantities of products.
  • Retail: Conducted by retailers who buy in smaller quantities and sell directly in stores.

Consumption

Consumption is the purchase of goods and services that people use to satisfy their needs. The product or service is utilized or consumed.

Factors of Production

There are three essential factors required to produce goods or services: Natural Resources, Labor, and Capital.

Natural Resources and Raw Materials

These are resources found in nature. Humankind transforms them to produce new goods. Natural resources are the most important foundation for production.

Labor

Labor refers to any human activity used to produce goods and provide useful services for people.

Types of Labor

  • Employment: Working for another party, such as being employed by a company.
  • Independent Work: Working only for oneself (self-employment).

Capital and Technology

To produce goods or services, having capital is essential. Capital includes buildings, facilities, machinery, or the technology necessary to produce goods or services.

The Market Economy

The market economy is the prevailing economic system. The market economy balances supply and demand through fair prices.

The Market: Vendors and Buyers

A market is where goods are bought and sold, and where sellers and buyers coincide. Sellers offer products, and buyers agree on the terms of purchase.

Product Price Determination

The price depends on the amount of product available (supply). If supply is scarce and buyers strongly desire the product, the price goes up. Conversely, if there is a large supply of a product, sellers may offer discounts, leading to a lower price.

The Law of Supply and Demand

The desire of both sellers and buyers to achieve maximum benefit allows for the setting of the price. The equilibrium point between price and quantity is determined by the law of supply and demand.

Other factors can alter demand, such as advertising and propaganda, which can increase the perceived desirability of a product. Advertising is necessary to inform consumers about a product.
