Economic Activities and Global Market Trends
Economic Activities and Factors of Production
Economic goods are produced by different types of resources called factors of production:
- Natural resources: These are provided directly by nature, such as water, earth, animals, and plants.
- Human resources: Persons who bring the fruits of their labor, work experience, and knowledge. These are also referred to as working capital.
- Capital: Identified with money, it is actually a factor of production for buildings, machinery, and facilities of any type.
Economic activities are grouped into primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors.
Changes in the World of Work
The characteristics displayed in this field within current market economies are:
- Increased number of job seekers: This is due to the incorporation of women and youth into the workforce.
- Information and Communication Technologies (ICT): Telecommunications and computing have revolutionized production and workers.
- Highly skilled workforce: Due to education, companies require specialized employees.
- Labor flexibility: Companies find it easier to fire employees and hire new ones; workers seek more free time, fewer working hours, or modular schedules that fit them.
- Improved working conditions: Achieved through legislation and agreements between social partners.
- Gender employment gap: There are more men employed than women because women face difficulties such as lower wages, shorter job durations, and the burden of childcare and domestic work.
The Globalization of the Economy
- Global Market: The internet allows companies to exchange, buy, and sell goods globally.
- Multinational Organizations: The same organization divides its activities between different countries in the world.
- Economic Integration Blocks: Countries have created two types of blocks: Free Trade Areas and Common Markets. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) are free trade areas. Common markets include the European Union and the Common Market of the South (Mercosur).
- International Agencies: Organizations like the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN) also favor economic interdependence.
- Global Interdependence: Economic globalization causes the release of indicators, such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), to have repercussions worldwide.
