The Story of Cry Freedom

Cry Freedom depicts the social turmoil in South Africa during the era of apartheid, a period defined by extreme racial segregation. The narrative follows Steve Biko, a revolutionary activist who initiates a social movement to challenge the systemic oppression of Black citizens.

The Meeting of Two Worlds

The story begins with the destruction of Black settlements and a subsequent newspaper editorial regarding Steve Biko. After reading the report, Mamphela, a Black doctor, confronts Donald Woods, the newspaper editor, insisting on the necessity of accurate reporting.

Driven by curiosity, Woods visits Biko. Despite Biko being under constant government surveillance, the two form an unlikely bond. Biko invites Woods to witness the living conditions of Black South Africans, allowing the editor to view the country's reality from a new perspective.

Escalating Tensions and State Repression

Woods continues his investigation, attending a Black football match with his photographer, Ken. There, Biko and Mzimbi deliver speeches that lead to Biko being brought to trial.

Tensions rise when a Black church is assaulted by police. After a witness identifies the police captain, De Wet, Woods attempts to report the incident to the Police Minister, Kruger. The authorities threaten Woods with imprisonment unless he reveals his source, but he refuses. Consequently, both Woods and Biko face intense harassment, and two Black journalists, Tenjy and Mapetla, are arrested.

The Tragic Death of Steve Biko

Biko is arrested while traveling to Cape Town to address students. While in custody, he is brutally tortured and dies. Woods attempts to document these events, but authorities discover photographs of Biko’s body, leading them to restrict Woods' rights and forbid him from publishing.

The Escape to Freedom

Following Biko’s funeral, which is attended by thousands, Woods decides to write a book to expose the truth to the world. His first attempt to flee South Africa fails. After the Woods family children are attacked, his wife insists they escape to ensure Biko’s story is told.

The family executes a daring plan: Woods disguises himself as a priest to cross the border. They travel through Lesotho and Botswana before finally securing a flight to America. The story concludes with the family successfully escaping to freedom.
