Consumption and Globalization in Modern Society
Consumption in Modern Societies
Consumption is a central feature of modern societies. The development of the capitalist economic system is based on the activation of consumption. In the last two centuries, the world has changed more than in the entire history of mankind. Cultural, political, and economic factors have led to the current experience where all social groups are interconnected and interdependent. The way we eat maps out a company, its social groups, and its different lifestyles. Through advertising, we can see how it has transformed the economic system and our daily lives.
Globalization
Globalization implies that we live in one world where everything is interconnected, including nations and peoples. It mainly addresses the economic dimensions, such as multinational corporations (MNCs), that transform not only the economy but also society, culture, and commerce. Advances in research, technology, and communication have created an integrated economy based on activities like the internet and electronics.
The development of global social relations entails great disparities between industrial societies and the Third World. Globalization affects the lives of people in all countries, changing both overall systems and everyday life. Rather than producing a unified world, it has created significant divisions and conflicts.
Perspectives on Globalization
- Skeptics: They do not believe globalization is new and argue it has been overestimated. They doubt the existence of a truly global economy and maintain that the nation-state remains a primary source of identity.
- Hyperglobalizers: They believe these changes are innovative and that borders are effectively disappearing. They argue that no state can fully control its national economy, leading to a loss of economic sovereignty.
- Transformationalists: This midpoint theory suggests that while changes are neither entirely new nor limited, they are moving in contradictory directions that are not controlled from a single location.
