Cold War Dynamics: Alliances, Arms Race, and Key Periods
Cold War Dynamics
Defensive Military Alliances
- North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): Formed by the United States and other Western nations.
- Warsaw Pact: Founded and led by the Soviet Union.
Creation of Large Military Blocs
The formation of two major blocs led to an arms race. The threat of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, loomed over the world. A balance of conventional and nuclear weapons was maintained to prevent direct military confrontation between the superpowers.
Stages of the Cold War
High-Tension Period: 1947-1956
- Berlin Blockade: Berlin was divided into four occupation zones. The Soviets controlled the German sector. Western allies decided to combine their German occupation areas. Stalin opposed the air bridge used by the allies to supply the city's citizens. Stalin eventually lifted the blockade. As a result of this crisis, Germany was divided into two states: the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) aligned with the Western bloc, and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) within the Soviet bloc.
- Korean War: Korea, divided into northern and southern zones after World War II, fell under Soviet and US control respectively. North Korea, supported by the USSR and China, invaded the South, initiating the war.
Reconciliation and Coexistence: 1956-1977
This period was characterized by the coexistence of the two blocs. The growth of nuclear power meant both the Soviet Union and the United States possessed the genuine ability to destroy each other. Political changes occurred within both blocs, with leaders like Khrushchev in the Soviet Union and Kennedy in the United States.
Khrushchev's initiative marked the beginning of a less confrontational approach, although serious conflicts still arose.
Détente and Expansion: 1977 onwards
Following the tension of previous conflicts, a greater understanding emerged between the two blocs. New leaders emerged, including Brezhnev and Nixon in the Soviet Union and the United States, respectively.
- Student protest movements appeared, advocating for disarmament and opposing the Vietnam War.
- The Soviet Union militarily crushed uprisings in Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
