The Origins and Core Beliefs of Christianity

Christianity is a monotheistic religion of Semitic origin based on the recognition of Jesus of Nazareth as its founder and central figure. His followers believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah (or Christ) prophesied in the Old Testament, who died as a ransom for the sins of mankind and rose again after his death.

Its sacred texts, shared with Judaism, include the Tanakh, which serves as the basis for the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. Consequently, it is considered an Abrahamic religion alongside Judaism and Islam. Since becoming the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century, Christianity has exerted a significant influence on Western and global culture. It currently has over 2.1 billion followers—nearly a third of the world's population—making it the largest religion in the world.

Divine Revelation and Human Purpose

Through his love, God has revealed himself to humanity, providing a definitive answer to the questions people ask about the meaning and purpose of their lives. Beyond the testimony found in creation, God spoke to our first parents and, after the fall, promised salvation.

The Covenant of God

• Noah: God sealed an eternal covenant between Him and all living things.
• Abraham: God chose Abraham and made a covenant with him and his descendants.
• Moses: God formed his people and revealed his law through Moses.
• The Prophets: They prepared humanity to accept the salvation destined for all.

God has revealed himself fully by sending his own Son, in whom he has established his covenant forever. The Son is the Father's definitive Word, meaning there will be no further revelation after Him.

The Christian Life

A faithful Christian is called to:

• Preach the Word of God and share His works.
• Receive baptism to remove original sin and become a child of God.
• Perform good deeds at all times.
• Follow and meet all of God's commandments.
