Characters of the Jara

Main Characters

Charito

The largest child, born deformed and unable to speak or move. Charito's cries resemble terrifying screams. She shares a bond with her uncle, Azariah, possibly due to their shared innocence, referred to by Mr. Delibes.

Ivan

The master of the farm, holding some appreciation for Paco's hunting skills, appointing him as his secretary. Ivan is the son of the Marchioness and shows special attention to Pura, Peter the Expert's wife. Selfish and focused on his welfare and social image, he neglects Paco, even resorting to physical punishment.

Peter the Expert

Socially superior to Paco but subservient to Ivan. He endures Ivan's flirtations with his wife, Pura. A man without agency, trapped in an unhappy marriage.

Pura

Peter the Expert's wife, attracted to Ivan. An exuberant young woman who enjoys provoking her husband.

Supporting Characters

Azariah

A humane man whose words, "Milan pretty, pretty Milana," set a rhythm to the story. Brother of Regula and former worker at the Jara. At seventy-one, he claims to be "one year older than his Master." He wears worn corduroy pants, has bare feet, and a toothless mouth. He shows affection for Charito and the birds.

Paco Lower

The farm keeper turned secretary to Ivan. Married to Regula, he is compassionate, simple, helpful, and obedient, avoiding conflict.

Regula

Paco's wife and Azariah's sister. A strong woman who desires a better future for her children. She understands the importance of discretion at the farm.

Nieves

A quiet, observant child working at Peter the Expert's house. She dreams of communion but is mocked. Like her brother Quirze, she is ashamed of her parents' situation.

Quirze

A quiet, introverted child who witnesses his parents' mistreatment but remains silent. He briefly replaces his father in accompanying Ivan on hunts.
