Andrea: The Protagonist

Andrea is the main character of this story, a girl of eighteen. Physically, she is tall and thin, with a dark face, dark eyes, and pale skin. She is a little shy and very flirtatious, yet she wears no formal makeup because she lacks the economic means to afford it. Andrea is a rebel; she does not like being told what to do or being prohibited from doing what she wants.

She evolves throughout the story due to the misfortunes, disappointments, dissatisfactions, and suffering she endures during her stay on Calle Aribau. Andrea begins as a simple and naive girl, fresh from the countryside, who possesses dreams and ideals she aims to realize. By the end, we find a mature woman who looks at life without much hope.

Secondary Characters: The Family

  • Granny: Her role is highlighted by her attempts to defend her children and Andrea against what people say about them. She is elderly and prone to fits of "madness."
  • Angustias (Sorrows): Andrea's aunt. She is very impulsive and eager to give advice to her niece. She views herself as a saint and believes nobody understands her. Eventually, she leaves to join a nunnery.
  • Juan and Gloria: Andrea's uncle and aunt. They are married and share a child, but their relationship is defined by constant discussions and physical altercations. Gloria believes it is Juan's siblings who have messed with his head, leading to mutual accusations. While Gloria speaks incessantly about their problems, Juan devotes himself to painting; however, other characters believe his paintings are not very good, despite his own opinion.
  • Román: Another of Andrea's uncles. He is a musician who enjoys playing and writing songs for the piano. A known womanizer, he previously attempted to be Gloria's lover and seemingly felt a passion for both Andrea and Ena. His life ends tragically when he commits suicide.

Friends and Social Circle

  • Ena: Andrea's best friend and primary support system. They meet frequently, often accompanied by her boyfriend, Jaime (James).
  • Pons, Iturdiaga, and Guixols: These are the friends Andrea meets during a crisis in her friendship with Ena. They gather at her home and spend time together. It is suggested that Pons was in love with Andrea.
