Central Region (Venezuela)

The Central Region of Venezuela is one of the most industrially developed of the ten political-administrative regions into which the country is divided. It is located in the center-north of the country and is made up of the states of Aragua, Carabobo and Cojedes. It borders the Caribbean Sea to the north, the Capital Region and the Region of the Plains to the east, the West-Central Region to the west, and the Los Llanos region to the south.

The Central Region is one of the most densely populated regions despite having a relatively small surface area. The body designated to manage development in the region is called Corpocentro.

History

As in the whole country, after the beginning of the democratic era a policy of regionalization began to develop. In 1969, a presidential decree provided the first legal element that initiated regionalization in the country. The decree established the Central Region and seven other regions in the country, and laid the groundwork for the creation of various regional bodies, including the entity that would eventually be created as Corpocentro in late 1981. Geography

The region consists of the states of Aragua, Carabobo and Cojedes. It occupies about 26,000 km2.

Limitations of the Central Region

It is bordered on the north by the coastline of the Caribbean Sea and the Capital Region; to the east by the Capital Region and part of the plains region; to the west by the West-Central Region; and to the south by the plains region and the state of Barinas.

Economy

The Central Region is among the top three regions in terms of economic development. The main activities are concentrated in the secondary and tertiary sectors:

  • Manufacturing: large manufactories and industrial hubs in Valencia and Maracay.
  • Services: banking, transportation and other urban services in major cities.
  • Agriculture: to a lesser extent, agriculture remains linked to the production of raw materials for food and beverages, which are processed within the region.
