1. The Catalan Urban Network: Hierarchy and Complementarity

The urban network of Catalonia is a well-integrated system, characterized by constant exchanges between its various towns and cities.

1.1 The Hierarchy of the Catalan Urban System

This hierarchical network is clearly defined by the following levels:

  • The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona: Plays a central role in administration, economy, and services, impacting the entire Catalan territory. It is divided into two zones:
    • The Metropolitan Core: Includes Barcelona and nearby towns such as L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà, Badalona, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and Sant Cugat.
    • The Metropolitan Crown: Surrounds the core and is highly industrialized, including cities like Mataró, Mollet del Vallès, Granollers, Sabadell, Terrassa, Martorell, and Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Cities of Regional Influence

These cities exert economic influence beyond their county boundaries:

  • Reus-Tarragona: A major conurbation.
  • Tortosa: Central hub for the Terres de l'Ebre region.
  • Lleida: Core of the Terres de Ponent.
  • Girona: Central hub for the north-eastern regions.
  • Manresa: Main urban center for the central region of Catalonia.
  • Vic: Key communication focus for the Ter and Congost river valleys.

Regional and Sub-regional Centers

  • Regional Centers: Provide services to their specific regions and interact with higher-level centers (e.g., Figueres in relation to Girona, or Mollerussa in relation to Lleida).
  • Sub-regional Centers: Serve surrounding populations, such as Roses for the coastal strip of Alt Empordà or Bellver de Cerdanya for mountain villages in the Baridà and Cerdanya regions.

Typically, a town establishes relations first with its regional center, then with higher-level regional hubs, and finally with the Barcelona metropolitan area, depending on the services required.

1.2 An Integrated Network

Catalan cities also maintain strong peer-to-peer exchanges. For example, the relationships between cities like Manresa and Vic demonstrate that our cities form a well-integrated network.
