Catalan Literature: Jacinto Verdaguer, Narcís Oller and Frederic Soler
Jacint Verdaguer (1845–1902)
Born in Folgueroles, Verdaguer was raised in a rural environment with eight siblings. His education began at the seminary, where he was influenced by both oral lore from his mother and European Romantic literature. He served as a private chaplain for Antonio López, the Marquis of Comillas, starting in 1870. His travels on the Transatlantic Company ships inspired his writing, including Atlàntida (1877), an epic poem exploring the myth of the lost continent and the birth of America and Spain. His major work, Canigó (1886), focuses on the origins of the Christian medieval epoch. His literary style evolved from mystical and floral poetry to epic narratives consisting of 12 cantos and an epilogue. He passed away in Vallvidrera in 1902.
