Bureaucratic Barriers in School Ethnography: Obstacles, Modernity and Social Relations
Bureaucratic Barriers Preventing Ethnography in Schools
The first obstacle and its characteristics are the bureaucratic barriers that prevent the teaching staff from getting to know the students well enough to carry out an ethnography of the school. These modernity barriers are applicable in almost all institutions. The obstacles are common to all ethnography, as pro + ursing x presents in bureaucracy.
Attempts at the institution of modernity is the first of its kind. Although the true schools are the bureaucracies, they are also fundamentally bureaucracies. School education is the first special institution.
The operation of the first school is crossed by a diversity of codes, and academic knowledge surpasses the monkey. It is necessary to set out the manifesto of the production of concrete cultural processes, which are carried by agents that are the carriers and users of practices for socialization.
The introduction of the school into mainstream education processes is based on human communication, the reach of the action of its own bureaucracy.
Institutionalized Learning
In the ursing context, education is institutionalized in learners learning in roles and environments to define different learning processes, which eventually apply. Educational networks distinguish between curriculum practices, formal particles and institutions' scheduled practices, for example with a group of friends in the cave, in which the properties of the ursing differ from other educational institutions.
The difference from other educational institutions influences the way we do and data the school ethnography. Across schools, precisely because of this, is the educational processes extractable. Intentionally ordinary processes are natural.
- Communication, pedagogical and didactic issues, as experts we know.
- Ordering in stable roles and learning of teaching.
- We believe the programs are in the same time-space and the first step.
Distinct applications of knowledge in the same time and space.
Ambits of Quality
1.1 Individual, 1.2 Social Relations, 1.3 Concrete, 1.4 Process
We see universal bureaucratic production realities as opposed to the ethnographic production in realities, in relation to four basic dimensions of ethnographic research: subject, relation, concrete and process.
- Subject: The differences in the subject of bureaucratic production summarize individualistic subjects, which are reduced to becoming individuals registered as such. Ethnographic production takes social subjects as the socialization agents, which employ a culture of communication and its meaning.
- Relation: Regarding the differences in relation, bureaucratic production is opposite to social relational ideology, individualistic fragmenting institutions, adjusting their procedures. Ethnographic production is fundamentally holistic: it focuses on the inquiry into social relations, searching for practices and rings of human institutions.
- Concrete: Focusing on the concrete, bureaucratic production is opposite to social concrete, consisting of abstract sets, procedures, functions, where no one is immune to defects. They emphasize their system of expert profiles, abstract systems of knowledge and action, universality. On the other side, ethnographic production of social concrete looks at the profiles of concrete institutions, establishments, cities and access points where subjects are and use.
- Process: The process in the production of bureaucratic social concrete processes is interested in research or evaluation results, without interest in the processes that involve humans and their results. Bureaucracy is characterized by the "suppression of time", with emphasis on production; ethnographically, the results are reversed.
Schools incorporate their own bureaucratic devices, resources to offer a context. This is a limitation in the same way data can explore, joining problems of knowing and the school: a individualistic device, hypertrophied, universalistic and instrumental, an effective device restricting the field of culture.
School Encoding and Ambits of Instrumentality
1.1 School encoding, 1.2 Universal school and culture, 1.3 Individual conception, 1.4 Concept of good ethnography and consequences
The school building consequences individuals that are administrable, stripped of social references. School is built on the individual and the desocialized individual. It is a school.
To convince, the ursing aspires to the individual where their social origin is irrelevant to their social ascent. The data provided by the ursing are amputated data, ethnographically poor, because of their ignorance of the origin of relational thought. For ethnography, its codification overlaps the individualistic. To reconstruct the path, we must see how individualistic relational concepts can be codified.
Trying to answer this: anthropology gives a response to the question how is culturally an individual, what is its social form, how does the institution produce individuals in school?
The universalist point of view on the ursing asks whether to its pretension of serving a universalist to local life and real subjects. With respect to the school, as the state, the notion of "local" offers a string of significant institutions. The universalist ursing, as subjects, appears to be: universal, abstract and +IA2. Ursing generals face difficulties in responding to the locals and the concrete and structuring of social life.
We see some examples of the instrumentalist vision and means since teaching ethnography:
- Central principle of functional equivalence: ethnography illustrates that the subjects are not substitutable.
- Equality, equalization, discipline: The regime of the institution is disciplinary and offers two sides: the sweet side of democratic equality, and the not so nice face of bureaucratic equalization.
- Understanding of institutions: the aims of institutions are seen as instrumental needs, techniques, and not as negotiated purposes or conventional politics. Ethnography states that no school education is naturally essential and inevitable.
- Normalization: Specifically, normalization as a form of school recognition of diversity. On one side, ethnography presents the first step of careful attention to the exception of treatment. On the other hand, it not only documents differences, but different ways of conceiving difference.
- Utilitarian education: The way education is a means for subjects to meet rationally defined ends and universally recognized. Scholars and programmers, in terms of commonality with the institution, seek to disentangle any lived world, and so pretend to equip a universal validity. Revealing the ethnography of effect tensions of this pretension of delocalizing and the cultural relevance principle.
The school has a defined mission of "culture", legitimate culture, as the first form of knowledge. To hierarchize anthropology and ethnography has the mission of interpreting any form of comparative social life, and also uses its concept of "culture" when it is used in the school, bad ethnography.
We understand culture as a category that allows reflecting on us without restrictions. What is it that we and others can reach through communicative codes? Our special task then is to make better ethnographies. When we understand good ethnography as reflexive culture processes, we see a set of conventions that constitute subjects, and practices shape their actions, relations with locals and their social.
Restriction of the field of culture production is the school institution. Together, we care to produce our own data. Ethnography's advantages over the concept of communicating anthropological culture, communication and the concept of culture is better than other analytical concepts. Defend convincingly our concept of culture and test which serves best.
Two Ethnographic Experiences
These experiences are not objective studies of the school, but of research on the bureaucracy and other bureaucratic systems that process social life.
First Experience
Bureaucratic institutions illustrate the production of subjects who preferentially cut their functional purposes. They take the form of sets of floating anonymous persons.
We try to analyze diverse meanings of "trust and risk" (bureaucratic institutions and users). It is the first series of alignment and coordination, to work with the field, guided by general experiences. Participants with bureaucratic institutions research in knowing this: the central problem of study. It is also working with others, a system of discussion groups, object of collective sample collection.
The author took office in the study of attention to Citizens of the autonomous community of Madrid.
Bureaucratic institutions produce their own users in two basic operations: a) they define your measure, b) they aggregate conceived as. The first time, through restricting institutional role, floating sets present themselves as anonymous persons.
Second Experience
This was applied to the + R100T. It illustrates how bureaucrats can process subjects by identifying their name, almost always for references as individuals without social ties. Experience in this: the author works on a draft in the Arctic personnel since 7 years: the study problem of belonging, social and ethno-political translations (of Norwegian people guovdagadnu d).
The project is called "building the belonging", expressive practices and the appropriations of identity. Approximately one third of the total population is partially exploited or governed, thus two thirds of the population are other authors' concerns. The central purpose: to study discontinuities and dismantling of social continuities to the present, extensive family groups named siiddat.
The study has said valuable from 1911 and 1956. The first was enacted in 1976, a new way of regular economic activity. Annually, the Sami Norwegian pastors association with the state agreed a convention that provides subsidies and resources.
The data of the author (2004) has the appearance of a nominal list with other individuals, and attempts aid organizations would be able to reconstruct family lineages.
Experiences show two aspects of how bureaucracies work and their realities. The problem of driving the genesis of the bureaucratic social reality, how bureaucracies built society. This is an obstacle the way they intervene, and affect the ethnographic intention to present institutional expressions and their public. The obstacles stress that there is something with the first of effect naive identification of bureaucracy and secrecy.
This can overcome a anti-bureaucratic perspective. On the contrary, they seem transparent, they are the same, they try to logic function; they risk bureaucracies. Primarily, the tests of school ethnographic research and other bureaucracies to see the state that the subjects take the form of data that provide so they present dismantled elements, contextually poor data, and do not reflect on society and culture.
