Doors: Function and Anatomy

A door is an opening in a wall extending from the floor to a minimum height of 2.10 meters. Its primary function is to provide access to a space. Common materials include wood, iron, aluminum, glass, PVC, and thin steel plates.

Key Door Components

  • Lintel: A horizontal structural piece placed at the top of the opening that rests on the jambs and supports the weight above.
  • Jambs: Vertical structural elements on the sides of the opening that support the lintel and transfer forces to the floor.
  • Framework: The structure that holds the hinges or guides, allowing the door leaf to move. It consists of horizontal pieces (headers) and vertical pieces (jambs).
  • Banyots: Elements that connect the frame to the wall.
  • Hinges and Guides: Hardware attached to the framework that supports the door leaf.
  • Leaf: The mobile part of the door that opens and closes, housing the lock.

Interior doors are typically hollow and have a minimum width of 60 cm. Exterior doors provide access to the home and are solid for security, with a minimum width of 80 cm.

Types of Doors

  • Hinged: A leaf attached to the frame by hinges, available in single or double swing configurations.
  • Swing: Doors that open or close inwards or outwards.

A window is an opening in a wall at a specific height above the floor, designed to allow air circulation, natural light, and temperature regulation.

Key Window Components

  • Windowsill: A horizontal structural piece placed at the base of the window opening.
  • Frame: Includes the escopidor (lower part), which directs water away from the wall.
  • Gantry: A component that controls light entry.

Types of Windows

  • Practical: Leaves rotate around a vertical axis fixed to the uprights via hinges.
  • Sliding: The leaf moves along guides placed on the header and the sill.
  • Collapsible: The leaf turns on a shaft connected to the sill hinges.
  • Tilting: Rotates around a fixed horizontal axis.
