Agricultural Production in Spain: Key Crops and Trends
Cereals
Cereals occupy 36% of the cultivated area. They are spread over almost the entire peninsula, though coverage is lower in the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coastal regions. In general, production is intended for animal feed rather than human consumption. Predominant crops include corn, rye, and barley. While usually grown in dry conditions, corn and rice require irrigation. Production has increased due to seed selection, fertilizers, and irrigation techniques. Cereals are grown in both rainfed and irrigated lands, with significant production in Castile, Extremadura, and Andalusia.
Legumes
Legumes (pulses) are primarily grown for human consumption. Production has decreased due to difficulties in mechanization and low yields. They prevail in regions with high grain production: Castile, Extremadura, and Andalusia.
Viticulture
Vid: This shrub produces grapes for dry food or wine production. There is a surplus in production, and grapes are also distilled to produce alcohol (96% and methyl alcohol). The major production area is Castilla-La Mancha, while the highest quality wines are found in the Rioja region. Cava production has grown significantly in recent years.
Olive Cultivation
Olivo: A tree highly resistant to drought. 10% of production is intended for table supply, while the rest is used for oil production, both supported by the European Union. Olive oil faces challenges regarding mechanization, high prices, and EU quotas that have limited irrigated acreage. Solutions include increasing the production of extra virgin olive oil and enhancing quality through designations of origin.
Fruit and Vegetables
Fruit and Vegetables: These products go directly to consumption or the canning industry. Production has increased due to higher domestic consumption and exports, particularly through early-season products grown with irrigation. Key types and regions include:
- Citrus: Valencia, Andalusia, and Murcia
- Stone fruit: Ebro Valley and coastal zones
- Pome fruit: Ebro Valley, Levantine coast, and parts of Asturias
- Bananas: Canary Islands (facing strong competition from Africa and North America)
- Flowers: Catalonia, Murcia, and the Canary Islands
- Almonds: Aragon and Tarragona (in competition with Turkey)
Industrial Crops
Industrial crops require processing before reaching the consumer, such as sunflowers, cotton, sugar, and tobacco. Most require irrigation, significant capital, and are highly dependent on the industry. They are primarily located in Extremadura, Andalusia, and the Ribera del Duero.
Forage Products
Forage products are grown as food for animals, predominantly corn and alfalfa. These are primarily cultivated in the northern regions, north of Madrid.
