Agricultural Activities in Spain Today: Rural Economy & Farming
Agricultural Activities in Spain Today
Current Importance of Agriculture
The rural world is increasingly diverse and complex. Tradition and modernity coexist and rural areas have been modernized, with differences according to each area's adaptability to change over the last half century.
New Uses of Rural Space
Causes:
- New positive perception of the rural due to the growth of "urban malaise," which reassesses the countryside as a synonym for high quality and tranquillity, and a trend to decentralize residence.
Consequences:
- Positive: More balanced distribution of population and economic activity, breaking the traditional contrast between rural and urban, and recovery of rural economies.
- Negative: Loss of identity in agricultural areas, environmental degradation, and other adverse effects.
Rural Crisis Symptoms
The crisis manifests itself in rural areas as follows:
- Decline in the population engaged in farming.
- Decrease in agriculture's relative contribution to GDP.
- Reduction of agricultural participation in foreign trade, although agriculture cannot be abandoned for political, social, and environmental reasons.
Problems of Rural Areas
- Demographic: Decline and aging of the rural population resulting from youth migration to cities and low-skilled labour availability, which hampers innovation.
- Economic: Lack of diversification, difficulty adapting to changes in demand, increasing dependence on industry, market volatility, and regulatory intervention (e.g., health, animal welfare under the CAP).
- Equipment and Quality of Life: Insufficient infrastructure and community services in some areas.
- Environment: Degradation of vegetation, soil, and water resources.
Rural Planning and Economic Development
Rural planning is required, considering farming as a basic economic activity. Support and funding come from the EU (Structural Funds, EAFRD) and other administrations.
- Diversification: Industrial activities or processing of agricultural products and development of rural tourism.
- Modernization and Quality: Enhancing product quality through designations of origin and other quality schemes.
- Promotion of Cooperatives: Strengthening collective action and market access.
- Infrastructure and Services: Improving infrastructure and community facilities to empower district centres and help prevent the depopulation of small settlements.
- Environmental Protection: To protect the environment, farming must adopt sustainable practices and conservation measures.
Conditioning Factors
Diversity of Ecological Conditions
The agricultural activity is based on the economic exploitation of ecological resources, but it may not always produce profitable or competitive products. The interaction between agricultural and ecological space causes productive specialization across the three Spanish dominions.
Atlantic Domain
The Atlantic domain, with dense forests in many areas, coincides with a humid climate throughout the year and mild temperatures that depend on altitude, from the headwaters of the Pyrenees to the Galician massif.
Mediterranean Domain
The Mediterranean domain, covering about 80% of the territory, is described as the warm sector of Spain's horticulture, developed on coastal plains and inland Mediterranean and Atlantic enclaves. It is characterized by prolonged summer aridity.
