The Origins of Handball

Handball was created by German professor Karl Schelenz in 1919. Following the rules published by the German Federation of Gymnastics, the sport began to be played competitively in countries such as Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. In this initial phase, handball matches were held on grassy fields, similar to football. As in soccer, each handball team was composed of eleven players.

Key Historical Milestones

  • 1925: The first international handball match was held between teams from Germany and Austria.
  • 1934: The IOC (International Olympic Committee) included handball as an Olympic sport.
  • 1938: The first world handball championship was played in Germany.
  • 1946: On July 18, the IHF (International Handball Federation) was founded,

Mobility Aids and Rehabilitation: Crutches, Splints, PMR

Sport and physical education12.35 KB

Crutches: Mobility, Types, and Safe Use

Crutches are mobility aids designed to help individuals walk when they cannot use one or both legs effectively. They transfer weight from the legs to the upper body, allowing a person with an injury, surgery, weakness, or disability in the lower extremities to move around safely and independently. Crutches are commonly prescribed after fractures, ligament injuries, joint replacements, or neurological conditions that impair balance or strength.

Purpose and Function of Crutches

The main function of crutches is to provide support, balance, and mobility. They relieve pressure from an injured leg or foot by shifting body weight to the arms and shoulders. Crutches also help maintain independence during recovery,...

Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Metabolism Differences

Understanding the fundamental differences between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism is crucial for comprehending how the body generates energy during various types of physical activity.

Aerobic Metabolism

Aerobic metabolism is the process where the body converts nutrients into energy with the presence of oxygen. Its primary waste products are carbon dioxide and water.

This metabolic pathway primarily occurs during endurance activities, where a steady supply of oxygen is available to fuel prolonged effort.

Anaerobic Metabolism

Anaerobic metabolism is the process where the body converts nutrients into energy without the presence of oxygen. Its waste products include lactic acid, water, and carbon dioxide....

Key Figures of Permian Football

Boobie Miles: Permian's Star Prospect

Boobie, whose real name is James Earl Miles Jr., is one of six players the book focuses on. Even in his junior year, he was considered a top prospect by colleges nationwide. Boobie is clearly talented, but also cocky and self-absorbed. Coming from an impoverished background, he was adopted by his uncle, L.V. Miles. Boobie suffers a career-ending knee injury early in his final season.

Brian Chavez: Academic & Athletic Talent

Brian is the only Hispanic player on the Permian team. He is relentless on the field, punishing opponents every play. Unlike other players on the team, Brian is academically gifted. He is at the top of his class and has the unique advantage of securing...

Composition and Function of Bones

Bones are the rigid part of the musculoskeletal system. The skeletal system consists of approximately 206 bones in the human body. Basically, bones are composed of water and minerals formed from calcium and phosphorus, and a substance called ossein (osteína).

Major Divisions of the Skeleton

1. Skeleton of the Head

The head bones are divided into two parts:

Defining Physical Fitness and Physical Capacity

Sport and physical education2.73 KB

Physical Fitness and Physical Capacity

Physical Fitness

Everyone needs to be in good physical condition to perform any physical exercise. Having good physical condition is the ability to produce and sustain energy to perform a task well, while maintaining physical strength and concentration.

Factors Influencing Physical Fitness

Physical fitness depends on several factors, including:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Central nervous system coordination
  • Physical ability
  • The age at which training begins

Manifestations of General Fitness

General Fitness: This is basic training for the continuous and harmonious development of systems like the cardiovascular system, muscle strength, and joint mobility.

Specialized Fitness: This focuses on developing specific skills for a particular...

Effective Basketball Defense Strategies: Zones and Techniques

Sport and physical education3.53 KB

Effective Basketball Defense Strategies

A. Single Defense

1) Defense Rated: Each defender is assigned to an attacker and only marks them.

It was not very efficient. Players were placed between the basket and the attacker.

B. Individual Defense Support

Every defender has to be aware of two references: the player with the ball and the player assigned to defend. The goal is to have more defenders than attackers in the vicinity of the ball (e.g., 5 defenders vs. 3 attackers).

Each attacker is linked by an imaginary line to the player with the ball (passing lane). The closer this line passes, the more pressure should be applied. Defenders are more buoyant when separated from the line.

C. Jump and Change (Unusual Defense)

One dribbling move. Attackers are...
