Sixteenth Century Renaissance Poetry

The poetry of the 16th-century Renaissance began to express new sentiments. The focus shifted towards humanism (the 'man center'). Castilianization was increasingly evident, appreciating a degree of influence, as seen in figures like Joan Boscà. Sentiments related to commerce and the Americas also began to appear.

Catalan Poetic Influences and Innovations

  • Ausiàs Marc's Influence: Catalan poetry, influenced by Ausiàs Marc, attempted to introduce metrical innovations derived from Italy, such as the decasíl·lab (decasyllable), while maintaining a traditional air.
  • Poets of Mixed Tradition: Poets like Pere Serafí and Joan Boscà mixed Catalan and Spanish elements.

Pere Serafí (PS)

His work includes “Two Books”,...

Rhyme VII: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

This commentary examines Rhyme VII by the Sevillian poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. Within the series of poems often grouped together, Rhyme VII belongs to the first collection, in which the poet reflects on the nature of poetry itself. This series ranges from Rhyme I to Rhyme XI.

Bécquer's work is situated within the post-romantic movement, characterized by simplicity, melancholy, and specific thematic and vocabulary choices.

Theme

The theme of this rhyme is a reflection on art itself and the potential that resides within every individual. To awaken the art that everyone possesses, one requires external assistance. The author illustrates this using two metaphors:

  • A musical instrument (which requires a player).
  • The

Spanish Literature: From Renaissance to Baroque

Mannerism

As a movement of transition between the Renaissance and Baroque, Mannerism was used to define elaborate artists' works. This current arises as a reaction to classicism, characterized by the rejection of rigid rules and the free use of forms. Based on literary theory, a clear example is in the sonnets of Góngora and Lope.

Baroque

There was a great development of poetry. Everything could be poetic material. It is a poetry of contrasts because there is a meditative face, a difficult and misleading world, and almost every issue addressed from a mock perspective. Sonnet and romance are common forms.

The essential feature of the Baroque mentality is distrust in itself. Topics such as disappointment

The Entertainment of Music Concerts: A Personal Opinion

Music648 bytes

Music Concerts

Yes, I usually go to large concerts but it depends on the concert and if I like the music or not.

For example, in my opinion, large classical music concerts are a bit boring, since it isn't my musical taste. But the concerts of rap, pop, etc., are more entertaining because I like that music.

In conclusion, going to a large concert depends on the tastes of each person, as they may be boring or not.

  1. No, he doesn't, because according to the text writer, the performance may be a single musician.
  2. Yes, I can, because concerts are held in a wide variety of settings

Ezra Pound on Poetic Rhythm and Musicality

Music3.02 KB

Let the candidate fill his mind with the finest cadences he can discover, preferably in a foreign language, so that the meaning of the words may be less likely to divert his attention from the movement; e.g., Saxon charms, Hebridean Folk Songs, the verse of Dante, and the lyrics of Shakespeare—if he can dissociate the vocabulary from the cadence. Let him dissect the lyrics of Goethe coldly into their component sound values, syllables long and short, stressed and unstressed, into vowels and consonants. Let the neophyte know assonance and alliteration, rhyme immediate and delayed, simple and polyphonic, as a musician would expect to know harmony and counterpoint and all the minutiae of his craft. No time is too great to give to these matters...
