Ramon Llull: Pioneer of Catalan Literature

The earliest significant manifestations of Catalan literature are attributed to Ramon Llull (Mallorca, 1232/35-1316). As one of the first authors to extensively use a major Romance language, Catalan, he produced a vast body of work, comprising 234 titles. He also wrote in Latin, as it was the international language of culture; Arabic, to engage with non-Christians; and Old Provençal, in which he composed most of his poetic works. His prolific Christian work saw him complete 13 books in just four years.

Key Characteristics of the Generation of '98

Latin2.72 KB

Core Features of the Generation of '98

  • Distinguishing Real Spain: A focus on the contrast between the "miserable" reality of Spain and the "apparent" official version. Their concern for Spanish identity fueled the debate on the "Being of Spain" for subsequent generations.
  • Love for Castile: A deep interest in the "miserable" and dusty abandoned towns of Castile. They revalued the landscape, traditions, language, and spontaneous "castizo" spirit, documenting this through travel books and the study of literary myths and ballads.
  • Literary Innovation: They broke the mold of classic genres by creating new forms: the nivola of Unamuno, the impressionist and lyrical novels of Azorín, the open and fragmented narratives of Baroja, and the theatrical, cinematic

Antonio Machado's Poetic Journey: Themes, Style, and Evolution

Antonio Machado's Poetic Legacy

War Poetry and Exile

His subsequent and diverse production includes "Poems of War" on issues and personalities of the Spanish Civil War. He resorts to traditional forms of verse. This commitment led him to die in exile. In his pocket were found his last few verses: "These days the sun blue and children."

Themes, Motifs, and Stylistic Features

In Machado's poetic production, there is a constant correspondence, undoubtedly his most authentic. This, along with the author's own character—discreet, reserved, polite—made him seem timid. Perhaps he abandoned fashion and eccentricity, which he saw as remarkably decorative, giving rise to a fundamentally intimate poetry.

Familial and Early Influences

Let us first consider...

Franco's Dictatorship in Spain (1939-1975): Politics, Economy and Society

Latin5.1 KB

Frankism: a military dictatorship

The Francoist scheme of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) was the first authoritarian dictatorship in Spain, characterised by the persecution of opposition, the rejection of communism and liberal democracy, and the defence of traditionalism. It was established after the end of the Spanish Civil War.

Totalitarian political scheme

The former general was head of state (Caudillo of Spain). He concentrated all powers in his person as Generalissimo of the armed forces. The regime allowed only one party, the FET y de las JONS, and a vertical trade union system, the Sindicato Nacional, and the Cortes.

The new scheme aimed to re-establish the centralised Spanish state that had been dismantled by the Republic. In 1936 it abolished...

Spanish Golden Age Literary Forms and Lope de Vega

Latin3.4 KB

Prose Fiction in the Spanish Golden Age

The Picaresque Novel

The pessimism caused by the decline of the political and economic boom of the peninsular kingdoms produced a strong bearish sentiment in literature. This pessimism finds its maximum expression in picaresque novels. The social and satirical characterization prominent in the Renaissance stage transforms into disappointment and nostalgia.

Therefore, the picaresque novels of this second period have certain differential features compared to Lazarillo de Tormes:

  • The novel takes on more moralizing scenes, often captured in burlesque, and there is less psychological realism in them. The author seeks brilliance and is often detached from the character's actions.
  • The main character remains an antihero,

Modernism in Hispanic Literature: Origins and Aesthetics

Latin2.29 KB

Modernism: The Renewal of Hispanic Poetry

The first signs of poetic renewal appeared in the late nineteenth century in Spain and Hispanic America. Around 1890, Rubén Darío and other writers adopted the term modernistas, driven by a desire to move away from existing Spanish literature and look toward American and French influences.

A] French Influence

Beyond the influence of the great French Romantic Victor Hugo, the movement was primarily shaped by two currents from the second half of the century:

  • Parnassianism: Focused on the beauty of form, the cult of formal perfection, and serene, polished poetry. Preferred topics include Greek myths and the evocation of bygone times.
  • Symbolism: Represented by poets like Verlaine, this movement proposed going

Francoist Repression and Social Control in Post-War Spain

Latin3.72 KB

Social Control and Internal Political Repression

Spanish society in the 1940s was marked by what is considered a strong repression of both Republicans and Communists. This led to the existence of concentration camps where Republican prisoners were interned. Some of these prisoners went to prison (in 1940, there were approximately 300,000), and in all cases, there was physical and psychological torture.

The Machinery of Post-War Persecution

Normal trials or military tribunals did not exist; instead, cases were handled under military laws, which often implied the death penalty. In Catalonia, 1,077 people were tried in military courts and sentenced to death based on anonymous allegations. A simple investigation was enough to imprison someone.

A special...
