GeologyUpdated on 2.27 KB

Colombia's International Land Borders

Venezuela Border

The border with Venezuela was defined by the Maria Cristina-Rina España Treaty of March 1891 and the Lopez de Mesa-Gil Borges Treaty of April 5, 1941. It spans 2,219 km, stretching from Castilletes in La Guajira to the San Jose de Cocuy Island on the Negro River.

Brazil Border

The border with Brazil is established by the Vasquez-Cobo-Martins Treaty (April 24, 1907) and the Ortiz-Garcia-Mangabeira Treaty (November 15, 1928). It covers 1,645 km, from San Jose Island to the mouth of the San Antonio Creek on the Amazon River.

Peru Border

The border with Peru was defined by the Salomon-Lozano Treaty of March 24, 1922. It spans 1,626 km, running from the San Antonio Creek to the mouth of the Putumayo...

Planets, Moons, and Stars in Our Solar System

Geology4.14 KB

Our Solar System

The Sun is the center of the place we call the Solar System. The eight planets that orbit the Sun are:

  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune

There are also five additional celestial bodies classified as dwarf planets. The five recognized dwarf planets are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.

The Sun

The Sun is a large ball of hydrogen, helium, and plasma. It is around four and a half billion years old and appears white in color from space. Its real name is Sol. From Earth, it appears to move along an imaginary line called the Ecliptic.

The Planets

Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest to the Sun. You could fit 19 Mercurys inside Earth. It is gray in color and lacks an atmosphere, moons, and a ring system....

Cultivation Practices for Key Crops: From Sowing to Harvest

Geology4.27 KB

Soybean

Requires warm areas and medium-textured soils.

Neutral pH preferred; drought-tolerant.

Sowing from August 20th to August 30th.

Seeding rate: 2.5–4 kg/ha, spacing: 12.5 cm.

Nutrition and Fertilization

Nitrogen (N) requirements vary, with 0–30 kg N/ha. 9 Phosphorus (P), 30 Potassium (K).

Herbicides applied pre-emergence; insecticides for pest thresholds.

Harvest

Chemical desiccation harvest, 10 days after, at 12-16% moisture.

Dry seeds to 8% for storage.

Oilseed Rape

Typical rotation: Winter wheat, oilseed rape, spring barley.

Avoid planting oilseed rape within 4 years on the same field.

Medium-textured soils with good aeration.

Frost-resistant; requires adequate nutrient supply. Needs vernalization.

Early sowing by late August.

Plant density: 30-...

Oil Refining Distillation Towers Explained

Geology5.39 KB

What are Distillation Towers in Oil Refining?

Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. While it is a form of oil, usable petroleum products are obtained after specific physical and chemical processes. A primary method for separating crude oil is fractional distillation. This method separates crude oil into different fractions and petroleum products, although not always in a pure state initially. This process is carried out in large industrial complexes known as refineries. Refineries subject crude oil to physical separation processes using a large variety of industrial distillation towers. These towers can contain numerous trays, separating crude oil into various compounds that are further processed to yield around 2,000 different products....

Argentina's Mountainous West: A Journey Through the Andes

Geology3.64 KB

The Mountainous West of Argentina

The Andes

The western region of Argentina is dominated by the Andes Mountains, one of the world's most significant mountain systems. The term "Andes" encompasses a vast array of high mountains and plateaus. The immense pressure exerted during the Andes' uplift affected older geological structures, dislocating and incorporating them into the mountain range. This process also impacted pre-existing formations like the foothills of La Rioja, San Juan, and Mendoza, as well as the Pampean Ranges.

Sub-Andean Sierras

The Sub-Andean Sierras are relatively young, low-lying mountains, reaching heights of around 2,500 meters above sea level. They stretch north to south, their peaks sharply eroded by rivers and heavy rainfall....

Tunnel Classifications and Construction Techniques

Geology4.56 KB

Tunnel Typology

General Tunnel Classifications

  • True tunnels: Typically constructed by boring or mining.
  • Cut-and-cover tunnels: Involve slope excavation and the construction of retaining walls, with the tunnel then covered.
  • Submerged tunnels: Constructed underwater, often by sinking pre-fabricated sections.

Classification by Ground Type

  • Soft ground tunnels: Require specialized soft excavation techniques and robust support systems.
  • Rock tunnels: Involve hard rock excavation methods and typically require moderate support.

Classification by Purpose

  • Without inner pressure: Examples include hydraulic, railway, road, pedestrian, and hybrid tunnels.
  • With inner pressure: Such as pressure galleries where the ground's stiffness significantly influences design and

Spain's Diverse Vegetation: Climates, Regions, and Landscapes

Natural Vegetation in Spain: Diversity and Landscapes

Factors Influencing Spain's Vegetation Diversity

The rich diversity of natural vegetation in Spain is shaped by a combination of physical and human factors.

Physical Factors

These include the varied climate, diverse relief, and different soil types across the peninsula. Spain's unique geographical location, acting as a bridge between continents, also plays a significant role in its ecological complexity.

Human Factors

Human activities, such as the introduction of species for their economic value or the degradation of existing ecosystems, also contribute to the current state of Spain's vegetation.

Biogeographical Regions of Vegetation

The Iberian Peninsula is part of the Holarctic Kingdom, which...

Earth's Structure, Landforms, and Climate Zones

Geology3.18 KB

Earth's Structure and Landforms

The Lithosphere

Earth was formed 4.6 billion years ago. Its internal structure consists of:

  • The Core: The center of Earth.
  • The Mantle: Surrounds the core.
  • The Crust: A thin layer of solid rocks.

The external structure includes:

  • The Lithosphere: Composed of the crust and the upper part of the mantle.
  • The Hydrosphere: All the water on Earth.
  • The Atmosphere: The gaseous layer surrounding Earth.

Continents

Continents are large expanses of dry land surrounded by oceans and seas, covering 29% of Earth's surface. The majority are located in the Northern Hemisphere:

  • Asia
  • America
  • Africa
  • Antarctica
  • Europe
  • Oceania

Islands

Islands are smaller masses of land surrounded by water, often located near the coast of continents. Some islands are grouped...

Food Preservation Techniques and Meat Cuts

Geology3.9 KB

Methods of Food Preservation

Goal

To prevent the growth of microorganisms, action of environmental agents, chemical and biochemical reactions, and insect attacks. Methods include asepsis, treatment, and conditioning.

Factors Favoring Microorganism Growth

  • Temperature
  • Oxygen
  • Water
  • Nutrients
  • pH

Traditional Methods

  • Salt: Dry (covering with salt) or brine (using a liquid solution with salt and spices).
  • Drying: Reducing water content through natural (sun) or artificial (heat, lyophilization) means.
  • Smoking: Exposing food to smoke from incomplete wood combustion, providing germicidal, antioxidant, and preservative effects.
  • Spices: Adding flavor and acting as preservatives.
  • Pickling: Treating food with vinegar or other liquids, often with spices and herbs.
  • Adobe:
...
