EconomicsUpdated on 2.5 KB

5. Autarky and Rations

Autarky and Its Effects

One of the main objectives of the first stage of the Franco regime was to achieve economic self-sufficiency (autarky). This promoted an economic policy that advocated isolation from the outside world and state intervention in the economy, replacing the free market. Autarkic economy had three main policy areas.

The First Area: Foreign Trade Regulation

Imports and exports were completely controlled by the state. This limited foreign exchange by reducing imports, resulting in higher prices for state-imported products and severe shortages of consumer goods. It also affected raw materials and power, leading to a decline in industrial production.

The Second Area: Industrial Promotion

Understanding Firms: A Business Economics Perspective

Economics2.48 KB

What is a Firm?

Let us now try to understand the meaning of a 'firm'. A firm is a focal point of the production system of any country. A firm produces goods with the help of its own resources. Sometimes these resources are borrowed from outside, and they are paid remuneration (price) for using them, for example, land, labor, capital, etc. A firm is an organizational unit, while a plant is a 'technical unit'. The objective of a firm in organizing such factors of production is to maximize profit. In other words, profit is the main objective of a firm. • Aggregation Problem: Challenges in combining diverse preferences.

Voting Mechanisms

Voting works effectively with single-peaked preferences (where individuals have one most preferred choice).

Problems with Voting
