In the Lyrical Ballads, poetry reflects a new sensibility which aims to disclose (revelar) … the immediate pleasure and enduring truth
Poet: Wordsworth says a poet is “a man speaking to men, someone who has a greater knowledge of human nature and a lively sensibility”. A poet sees “similitude in dissimilitude and dissimilitude in similitude”. Wordsworth explains that the poet differs from other men not in kind but in degree, since he is able to feel and think without immediate external excitement and he has a greater power in expressing his thoughts and feelings than others. However, the similarities between poets and men are greater than their differences, because the poet’s passions, thoughts and feelings are the general passions, thoughts and feelings of other men. “The poet binds together by passion and knowledge the vast empire of human society”.
Wordsworth’s definition of Poetry: Poetry is not just literature written in verse. Wordsworth describes poetry as a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings that takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility”. So, poetry has its origin in the internal feelings of the poet, it is a matter of passion and mood and it must flow naturally from the soul of the poet. However, poetry is never an immediate expression of such powerful emotions. A good poet must think long and deeply about them.
