Lecture 7: Cold War Conflict and the EU (1945–1965)

  • Postwar Reality: 1945 Europe was destroyed, filled with refugees and displaced persons. Shifting borders and mutual distrust between the USA and USSR led to the Cold War.
  • Simultaneous Processes: The Cold War division (USA vs. USSR) and Western European unity (cooperation) occurred concurrently.
  • George Marshall (Marshall Plan, 1947): The US provided $13 billion in economic aid to Western Europe to rebuild stability and contain Communism.
  • Berlin Blockade & Airlift (1948–1949): Stalin cut land access to West Berlin; Allies supplied the city via aircraft. This led to the formation of NATO (1949) and the Warsaw Pact (1955).
  • European Integration: The Schuman Declaration (1950) proposed pooling

Climate and Irrigation in Mediterranean Spain

The region features high temperatures in summer and mild temperatures in winter, with average rainfall except in the dry Southwest. The waters of the Guadalquivir and Ebro rivers have created a landscape of intensive irrigation outside coastal Mediterranean Spain.

The Meseta and Inland Agriculture

The Meseta domain, Spain's Mediterranean interior, is characterized by high average altitudes, long winters, and hot, dry summers. It possesses a large collection of great potential in agricultural irrigation, dedicated to the Mediterranean trilogy in drylands, often experiencing very sharp transition situations.

Changes in the Economic Context

There has been a significant transformation of the traditional... Continue reading "Modernization of Spanish Agriculture and Rural Landscapes" »

Spanish Restoration: Alfonso XII and the 1876 Constitution

The Restoration of the Constitutional Monarchy

General Martínez Campos proclaimed Alfonso XII, son of Isabel II, as king in 1874, which began the Restoration. The regime of the new king, a supporter of constitutional monarchy, named Cánovas del Castillo as the President of the Government. Cánovas was the real architect behind the return of the Bourbons to the throne. He worked to organize and stabilize the political situation. On one hand, he ended the war in Cuba and the Carlist War; on the other, he created a new political system in which all parties had room to accept the monarchy within a constitutional framework. This political system was based essentially on two pillars: a new constitution and the alternation of parties in power.

The

Evolution of Agrarian Societies and State Structures

Agrarian Society and the State

The agrarian economic system was based on an economy that produced what nature would not deliver on its own. They obtained all necessary resources through agriculture, leading to a significant social transformation: a sedentary lifestyle. Since they no longer had to travel for food, they settled in favorable locations to produce the first stable demographic nuclei.

These societies were egalitarian and self-sufficient, much like hunting societies, where all members contributed to the good of the group and its perpetuation. The individual maintained a connection to their group in terms of economics and thought, as there was no formal legal system.

The Emergence of the State

Around 3300 BC, these societies began to change.... Continue reading "Evolution of Agrarian Societies and State Structures" »

Understanding Colloids, Solutions, and Solubility

Colloids and Solutions

Colloids resist filtering, although some particles are retained in the filter. These particles can be detected by the scattering of light when it passes through the mixture; this property is called the Tyndall effect. Common examples of colloids include milk and certain juices.

In contrast, actual solutions contain particles with sizes similar to atoms or molecules (less than 1 nm). These cannot be filtered or decanted and do not exhibit the Tyndall effect.

Concentration and Solubility

The composition of a solution refers to the relative amount of solute in the mixture. Solutions have variable compositions, and their properties depend directly on these proportions. To describe a solution accurately, one must identify its... Continue reading "Understanding Colloids, Solutions, and Solubility" »

Bencomo: The Mencey of Taoro

Bencomo was the mencey (king) of Taoro, a Guanche menceyato on the island of Tenerife. He fought in the First Battle of Acentejo, a victory for the Guanches against the invading Castilians, after having refused the terms of Alonso Fernández de Lugo. He may have perished on the heights of San Roque during the Battle of Aguere, alongside his brother Tinguaro.

The First Battle of Acentejo

The first Battle of Acentejo took place on the island of Tenerife between the Guanches and an alliance of Spaniards, other Europeans, and associated natives on May 31, 1494, during the Spanish conquest of the island. It resulted in a victory for the Guanches of Tenerife.

Advancing to the interior of the island, Fernández de Lugo confirmed... Continue reading "Bencomo and the First Battle of Acentejo: Guanche Resistance" »

Empowering Women in Electronic Music

It’s hard for women in male-dominated fields like electronic music to get an equal amount of respect, attention, and credit as their male counterparts—especially when their struggles are belittled and doubted by promoters, fans, and colleagues. Collectives like Discwoman and female:pressure (as well as countless solo activists) have attempted to balance this dynamic with all or mostly female lineups, which draw attention to the dearth of female names on global festival and club bills.

Lilith Unfair: Berlin’s Techno-Feminist Bonanza

The biggest such techno-feminist bonanza to take place in the world’s underground clubbing capital, Berlin, joins the cause with Lilith Unfair. This festival is devoted to... Continue reading "Women in Electronic Music: Lilith Unfair and Gender Equality" »

Fundamental Physical Properties of Laser Light

Physical Properties of Laser Light

The physical properties of a laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) describe the unique characteristics of the light it emits. Below are the key physical properties:

1. Monochromaticity

  • Definition: Laser light consists of a single wavelength or color.
  • Explanation: Unlike ordinary light, which contains multiple wavelengths, laser light is highly monochromatic. This means it possesses a narrow spectral width.

2. Coherence

  • Definition: The phase relationship between light waves remains constant over time and distance.
  • Types:
    • Temporal coherence: This relates to how long the phase of the wave remains constant and is linked to monochromaticity.
    • Spatial coherence: This refers to the uniformity of phase

Understanding the Human Heart and Cardiac Cycle

The Heart: The Engine of Human Circulation

The heart is the motor of the circulation. If it stops, the brain stops receiving oxygen and dies.

The Phases of the Cardiac Cycle

Every beat of the heart follows a set of phenomena that constitute a cardiac cycle:

  • Atrial systole: The atria contract and push blood into the ventricles.
  • Ventricular systole: The ventricles contract and the blood leaves through the arteries by forcing the opening of the pulmonary artery and aortic valves. Blood cannot flow backward toward the atria, and its momentum causes the closure of the atrioventricular valves. This closure causes the first heart sound.
  • Diastole: The musculature of the heart walls relaxes, but the blood in the arteries cannot flow back toward the ventricles.
